More than 27 million Americans have been the victims of identity theft. Here’s what you can do to protect your identity:
- Do not give out financial information such as account numbers, credit or debit card numbers, or your Social Security number, unless you know the person or the organization.
- Report lost or stolen checks immediately.
- Notify the Credit Union of suspicious telephone inquiries, such as those asking for account information to “verify a statement” or “award a prize.”
- Closely guard your personal identification numbers (PINs).
- Shred any financial solicitations and statements before disposing of them.
- Put outgoing mail into a secure, official Postal Service collection box.
- If regular monthly bills fail to reach you, call the company to find out why.
- If your bills include questionable items, investigate them immediately.
- Periodically contact the three major credit reporting agencies to review your credit report and make certain the information is correct.
